Following a career performance that aided in James Madison extending its nation-leading win streak, junior running back Trai Sharp was named Colonial Athletic Association Football Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
In JMU’s 20-10 victory at Delaware on Sept. 30, Sharp rushed for a career-high 185 yards and a touchdown, averaging 5.1 yards per rush. The Blue Hens had allowed just 62 rushing yards per game entering last week. The Carrboro, N.C., native also caught three receptions for 13 yards to finish with a career-best 198 all-purpose yards.
It was Sharp’s second 100-yard rushing game of the season and the fourth of his career. Sharp ranks third in the CAA with 75.6 rushing yards per game and is fifth in yards per carry, at 6.0. This is JMU’s fourth CAA weekly honor this season and the second offensive player of the week accolade. It also marked Sharp’s first career honor from the conference.
The Dukes improved to 5-0 this year with the win at UD, extending their program-record and NCAA Division I-leading win streak to 17 straight games. That also ties the CAA all-time record, matching Richmond’s run between the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
Top-ranked JMU is off this coming week and returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 14 when it hosts No. 14 Villanova at Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field. The 2017 JMU football season is presented by CarMax.
