December 28th will be a big day for both UVA and Virginia Tech as they take the field for their bowl contest. Both teams got intriguing matchups which will test them in different ways. With regards to wagering on both, bowl games represent a dilemma for the gambler. On the one hand, you want to jump on early value that may present itself when the lines first come out, but you also can’t account for the knuckleheads who get suspended right before the game because they can’t balance fun and being in their room at the proper time. Virginia Tech’s matchup with Oklahoma State changes if Mason Rudolph is suspended or James Washington.
Let’s start out with the school in Blacksburg and their game down in Orlando against the Cowboys of the Big 12. It’s a great test for the Hokies defense that probably hasn’t seen an offense like this all season. They struggled at times with the speed of Clemson and Miami which is what OSU will bring to this game. I love Rudolph as a quarterback and think that he could be the sneaky best signal caller in the draft class. The health of the Hokies secondary will be important. On the other side of the ball, if Virginia Tech can’t get much going against the Cowboys defense, then they are truly hopeless. Their defense is pretty bad and has been porous against the run and the pass. I look for VT to add some wrinkles and we see some trick plays. The over is probably worth a look at around 62 or so.
The complete opposite of that game will be UVA vs. Navy. The Naval Academy will be the home team, but I bet there will be a strong Wahoo presence in the stands. The biggest prevailing theme in this one is that when you have extra time to prepare for the triple option, chances are you will succeed. This isn’t the best Navy team in terms of that and they get a little less prep time considering they have Army to worry about this weekend. UVA was alright against Georgia Tech so they will be familiar with this style of offense. Kurt Benkert also could have a huge game because Navy’s defense isn’t that great. I’m excited to see what this line could be as I think UVA has a good shot to win.
