Richmond hosts VCU tomorrow at 9 pm at the Robins Center.

The Spiders won the first round of the season, snapping a 6 game losing streak in the series by defeating the Rams at the Siegel Center 67-52 on January 17th.

Here are my keys to victory for Richmond:

  • Refocus. Distractions affected both teams this past weekend but Richmond was playing an average George Mason team at home that they could have beaten had they been a little tighter in their execution. It’s tough to say for sure if UR was looking ahead to their rivalry with VCU but it certainly had to be on their mind.
  • Grant Golden must again embrace the challenge of taking on Justin Tillman. Last time around it was a team effort for the Spiders when it came to rebounding. Nothing needs to change with that approach but Golden has to step up and earn the right to call himself the best big man in the city.

Here are my keys to victory for VCU:

  • Remember that you dominated this rivalry for a stretch and get back to that. However you have to motivate yourself, go about it. It’s one thing to let a rival win one every so often, but if you let them build on their successes you are going to dig a hole.
  • Find a secondary player who can be consistent offensively. This is more of an overarching theme for the Ram’s season and not a simple goal to always achieve for this team. They need more of the Sean Mobley we saw in the first half of Rhode Island. Or more of the Khris Lane we saw against George Mason. Or more of the De’Riante Jenkins who balled out against La Salle. The point is, someone is going to have to be impactful but also efficient.

For more on the game, tune into Black & Drew tomorrow morning at 8am. We will be joined by VCU Senior Guard Johnny Williams and Wayne Epps who covers VCU for the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
