Tonight the Richmond Spiders are set to face the Coppin St Eagles in the Robins Center at 7pm.  Richmond looks to build off of a strong double digit win against Danny Manning’s Demon Deacons. Redshirt sophomores Grant Golden and Jacob Gilyard led Spiders, with Golden tossing up a strong 24 points on a season where he’s averaging almost 21 points per game.  Gilyard struggled from the field (4-12 FG) but was 6-6 from the line and dished out nine assists.

Sophomore forward Nathan Cayo will also look to continue his success with 18 and 17 points against Georgetown and Wake Forest respectively.  Freshman starting guard Jake Wojcik will look to bounce back from a scoreless effort against Wake Forest. He will hope to return to form from the previous Georgetown game, one in which he put up 20 points and 4 rebounds on 6-11 shooting from deep.  This young Spiders roster has begun to rely on their younger players even more as of late, with increased minutes to freshmen Andre Gustavson and Sal Koureissi.

The Eagles are winless so far this year (0-9) including three 30+ point losses.  This is a great opportunity for the Spiders’ disruptive defense to continue to force turnovers, forcing 21 of them in their last game.  They’ll hope to continue to develop more rhythm on offense by integrating more of the bench. Against Georgetown, all 82 points were scored by Richmond’s starting lineup.  In contrast, the bench put up 19 of 84 total points last Saturday, a strong positive trend.

Coppin St’s only double digit scorers this year are sophomore guard Dejuan Clayton and senior guard Lamar Morgan, each averaging just over 10 points.  Gilyard, an A-10 Preseason All-Defensive Team selection, averages 3 steals per game, tied for third in the nation so he’ll look to lock up the Eagles’ backcourt.  Coach Mooney will try to lead his Spiders to a strong victory coming off his 240th career win as a Spider, a Richmond record.
